Nusrath Jahan NA

Zerund’s bricks are crafted from sustainable materials such as fly ash and recycled plastic waste. They offer a low-carbon alternative to conventional building materials. These bricks promote environmental sustainability by utilizing fewer resources and reducing the overall environmental impact of construction projects. Monk Spaces collaborated with Zerund to achieve GreenPro and GRIHA certifications for their innovative construction blocks. GreenPro and GRIHA are Type I ecolabels for building materials in India, recognizing products that meet stringent environmental and sustainability standards.

The GreenPro certification involved a detailed feasibility check to confirm Zerund’s eligibility, ensuring their bricks complied with sustainable building material criteria. Comprehensive data gathering on Zerund’s technology highlighted its composition, properties, and environmental benefits. Narratives on the manufacturing process emphasized sustainability and resource efficiency, demonstrating superior performance compared to traditional materials. Coordination efforts included facilitating effective communication, coordinating meetings, and addressing queries promptly. Monk Spaces ensured all documentation and data were meticulously uploaded to the GreenPro portal, showcasing Zerund’s technology’s sustainability and environmental credentials. A  site visit, organized by CII and facilitated by Monk Spaces, was conducted to demonstrate the functionality and environmental benefits of Zerund’s bricks, underscoring their compliance with certification standards.

As a crucial part of the GreenPro and GRIHA certification processes, Monk Spaces conducted a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Zerund’s bricks. This LCA followed internationally recognized standards such as ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. These standards ensure a thorough evaluation of the environmental impacts associated with the entire lifecycle of the bricks. The assessment covers every stage, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. The LCA provided a quantitative analysis of the bricks’ environmental footprint, including metrics like global warming potential, energy consumption, and resource efficiency. This rigorous assessment validated the sustainability claims of Zerund’s products and satisfied the certification requirements, affirming the eco-friendly nature of the bricks.

While pursuing GreenPro certification, Monk Spaces continued its support to help Zerund obtain GRIHA certification for its construction products. Meticulous data collection covered detailed descriptions of the bricks’ lightweight nature, earthquake and fire resistance, cost-efficiency, and environmental benefits. Extensive documentation development highlighted sustainable features and technological innovations, meeting GRIHA’s stringent criteria. All necessary data and documents were meticulously organized and submitted to the GRIHA certification platform, ensuring compliance and facilitating seamless communication with the GRIHA Council. Monk Spaces focused on accuracy, completeness, and efficiency throughout the certification process, supporting Zerund’s sustainability and environmental stewardship commitment.

Monk Spaces’ collaboration with Zerund for GreenPro and GRIHA certifications underscores their dedication to promoting environmental responsibility in the construction industry. The certifications validated the effectiveness and environmental benefits of Zerund’s construction blocks, enhancing their market reputation.

ISO 14025 defines Type I ecolabels as certifications awarded to products, materials, or services meeting environmental standards set by independent third parties. GreenPro is a Type 1  Ecolabel developed by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). It enables the building and manufacturing industries to choose environmentally responsible materials and technologies. It is accredited by the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) through GENICES – GEN’s Internationally Coordinated Ecolabelling System.

Monk Spaces assists and is involved in all the  following steps:

  1. Feasibility Check: A preliminary data assessment is conducted to ensure the minimum number of points required for certification can be met.
  2. Expression of Interest: The “Expression of Interest” is a one-page form completed by Monk Spaces on behalf of the client and sent to GreenPro to obtain a proposal.
  3. Proposal from GreenPro: Upon receiving the expression of interest, GreenPro’s team creates a proposal tailored to the client’s needs. Monk Spaces coordinates the proposal, confirmations, and payments between GreenPro and the manufacturers.
  4. Documentation: Simultaneously, Monk Spaces collects and evaluates all the data requirements. All the data discrepancies are also filled in. Monk Spaces works closely with clients to ensure their data meets GreenPro’s standards.
  5. Management of GreenPro Portal: Monk Spaces uploads comprehensive product data, including specifications, certifications, and compliance details, to the GreenPro portal. This upload encompasses images, technical documents and narratives related to the product.
  6. Review and Site Visit: After a thorough review of the documentation by GreenPro, our team addresses any questions or concerns. Next, GreenPro conducts a physical site visit to verify data accuracy and sustainability practices. If discrepancies arise, Monk Spaces prepare detailed rebuttal documents to address concerns and provide evidence of compliance.
  7. Issuance of Certification: GreenPro decides whether the product meets the certification criteria based on the assessment. If successful, the GreenPro Ecolabel is awarded to the product.

Monk Spaces handholds manufacturers through the entire process in a way that reduces the need for direct effort and involvement. The structured approach ensures that product information is accurately captured, organized and represented.

ISCC EU CERTIFICATION

Assisting KNP Arises for ISCC EU Certification

Nusrath Jahan N A

KNP Arises (or Ecoil) collects and filters used cooking oil (UCO) and facilitates its conversion into biodiesel. This innovative process reduces waste and offers an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. It significantly contributes to creating a more sustainable environment. Monk Spaces assisted KNP Arises in its pursuit of the ISCC EU certification.

The ISCC EU certification is internationally recognized for including legal requirements of RED II and other social and ecological requirements. The certificate is valuable for companies collecting used cooking oil (UCO) because it demonstrates compliance with sustainability regulations for biofuels. This certification assures buyers, like biodiesel producers, that the UCO was collected responsibly and meets specific environmental and social criteria. This certification can open up new markets, potentially increasing demand for your collected UCO and strengthening your position in the sustainable fuel industry.

Monk Spaces assisted KNP Arises throughout the entire certification process. Our team meticulously compiled the necessary data for multiple storage and filtration sites. This process involved creating detailed mass balance sheets and GHG emission sheets. Additionally, we compiled risk registers, self-declarations, vendor declarations, training requirements, and a thorough testing protocol.

In addition to data collection and documentation, Monk Spaces facilitated seamless coordination between KNP and the ISCC. We organized and oversaw site visits to the warehouses under audit, ensuring each site met the necessary compliance requirements. Our team also addressed any queries from the ISCC auditors, providing clear and precise information to simplify the certification process.

The ISCC EU certification requires annual audits, and Monk Spaces is supporting KNP Arises with ongoing assistance to ensure they continue to meet the certification requirements. At the broader level, KNP Arises’ achievement of the ISCC EU certification sets a strong precedent for the used cooking oil collection industry. It paves the way for a more circular economy for used cooking oil, minimizing waste and maximizing its potential as a renewable fuel source.
